AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS is a term used to identify many developmental disorders that include: Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder/ Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger's Syndrome (AS).

AUTISM The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) defines Autism as a developmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests.

PDD-NOS is characterized by developmental delays in socialization and communication skills. Children with PDD-NOS vary widely in their abilities, intelligence, and behaviors (NINDS).

Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) is characterized by a degree of impairment in language and communication skills. A distinguishing symptom of Asperger’s Syndrome is having obsessive interest in a single object/topic to the exclusion of another, often resembling “little professors.” Other symptoms include repetitive routines, peculiarities in speech and language, socially and emotionally inappropriate behavior and the inability to interact with peers (NINDS).

Prevalence: The National Institute of Mental Health found Autism affects approximately 1 out of 166 children, or approximately 300,000 children in the US. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the US. In North Carolina, there are an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 individuals with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum (ASA).

Treatment costs for a person with autism over his/her lifetime are approximately $3.2 million; annually is approximately $60,000 (ASA).
