Working in the same manner as general biofeedback, one is able to regulate brain wave activity and improve brain performance, including attention and concentration. Neurofeedback has been shown to be highly effective in treating many different physical and psychological disorders, and help with maximizing a sense of control and overall well being. Neurofeedback, or EEG Biofeedback uses electroencephalography to measure electrical activity of the brain.
Research has shown that EEG activity recorded in children and adults suffering with ADHD have consistently reported an abnormal abundance of slow wave frequencies, known as theta and have fewer faster wave frequencies known as alpha and beta waves (Lubar & Lubar, 1999).
Through use of neurofeedback, patients are able to learn to increase the frequency of beta waves (associated with alertness) and sensorimotor rhythm (associated with behavioral control) while decreasing theta waves (associated with daydreaming and loss of focus), thus leading to improvement of intellectual functioning, attention and behavioral control (National Institute of Mental Health, 2005).
